I will be travelling to Italy for a month. I will access the internet through unsecured wifi sites as we travel. I have been looking in to VPNs (Virtual Personal Networks) to add some security during my internet access. Has anyone used one? Do they really add to privacy and security? Which ones have you used>

My wife reguarly logs into work directly, from home, using a Cisco VPN setup. We had a heck of a time on our last vacation in Hawaii. The wi-fi setup in our hotel would not work with VPN; we had to find another wi-fi source. (hi-speed) I had no problem with my email, etc., but her VPN would not function on the hotel's brand new, but marginal wi-fi system. Caveat Emptor!

Getting Internet access in France and Italy was slightly more difficult than in the U.S. because of added security measure. Adding another layer of potential problems logging on would be an ongoing issue during your trip.
