Travelling with a Toddler

I am planning a trip to Italy this winter - probably in mid January. I am hoping to spend 10 days in Italy and have never been there before. For part of the trip, we will be visiting friends in Naples. We will be traveling with an 18 month old. I want to be realistic about what we can accomplish with a toddler in tow and would love any suggestions or recommendations for itineraries, things to see, do, kid-friendly actvities, and/or things to avoid.
Thanks!

Travelers of that age usually get burnt out fairly fast so we find most people can at best see half of what they would normally see in a day. Plan on stopping to people watch at a cafe or going back to a hotel room to take naps in the afternoon. There are a few guidebook companies that have created guides focused on traveling with kids and I would look into some of Lonely Planet's books and this website: http://www.travelwithyourkids.com/

Train travel is the way to go in Italy, and its kid friendly. I did 10 weeks in Italy with a 4 year old, and could not have done it without a stroller. Brought one over and ditched it there (a cheap umbrella stroller). In Rome, see the Colosseum, Forum, Spanish Steps and Pantheon when the child is awake and maybe go in St. Peter's and the Vatican with a sleeping child in the stroller. There is so much to see and you can bring your child anywhere!
