travelling to southern Italy January or February

I have been thinking of going to Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano, Capri in January or February. I know this is not the ideal time but early spring may not work out for me. Any comments on travelling at this particular time or should I be patient and travel at a later date. Thanks.

Hello Debra,

Well as a New Yorker I do know that what the Italians call winter is not very rough. So to one from Edmonton I do not suppose that the cold will phase you too much. The Amalfi Coast is not a great option in winter. If you really want to visit, late spring or early-mid fall is the all-around best time to go. In Jan and Feb it can be wet and raw. You might get lucky, and you might be unlucky. In addition, you will likely need a car. The coast road is the thing everyone wants to see, but it will be frustrating if the weather turns wet. If you take the inland autostrada snow could develop (rare but possible). Either way you lose the view you went to see. Some restaurants and shops run on limited schedules or are closed as well. Rome is a better bet in winter although it will be wet. If I may be so bold: Sicily is a good bet in February. The weather is mild. You will need a light jacket, and even a coat if you visit Mt. Etna (a must!), but there will be sun, and a good chance of spring-like weather. 20 c is not unusual. Although it is the off season, this can mean great deals on otherwise pricey hotels. You might need a car, but there are buses between the major cities. I hope this helps.

Try heading over to Tripadvisor. They have some resident experts responding to these questions int heir travel forum. I just read a post where they said that the amalfi coast closes up pretty tight during January. Hotels close etc. So you might want more info.
