travelling to Anzio from Rome

Hi planning a self guided trip to Italy. Specifically, from Rome to Anzio. Also, planning a trip to Pompeii from Sorrento. Questions on ways to travel between Rome, Anzio, Monte Cassino, Sorrento, leaving to return to US from Rome. Any thoughts or past experiences.

Rome 2 Rio website might be a good place to start. Plug in your start and end points for each trip and it will provides transportation alternatives. Then you can go to the appropriate website for scheduling, costs, and reservations.

I'm not clear if you would do Anzio as a day trip from Rome, or if you would go from Anzio to Cassino. Rome to Anzio can be done by train. Pompeii is easily reached from Sorrento by the Circumvesuviana train.

If Sorrento is your last stop, note that you would need to return to Rome the evening before you fly home. It would be too risky to do this on the day of, unless you have an evening flight.

Thx for the advice. Would their be any practical advantage to rentals car? Outside of Rome (due to the insane Roman driving). We would be traveling south to Sorrento eventually and returning to the airport. Thx again

Roman driving is far from insane. Especially as regards pedestrians, it is very much superior to Saint Paul. Different style of driving, yes, but with its own understood rules of the road.

A rental car has pros and cons.

The pros are that you are not bound by the train schedule, therefore you are more flexible. The other advantage is that with a car you don’t have to worry about luggage much, you just put it in the trunk and go. With trains you really need to travel light, because you have to carry your own suitcases on board and place them in the overhead compartment yourself, therefore anything more than one carry-on size (or at most a mid size) suitcase, it will be cumbersome to travel by train. Also some small towns and rural areas are not well served by public transportation, and in those cases cars are a must.

But with the car there are disadvantages too. You need to be comfortable driving in unfamiliar territory where the driving style may be different (and if you think traffic is insane in Rome, wait till you try driving in Naples). Driving in Italy is also particularly stressful for other reasons: roads are often narrow, traffic congested and parking is problematic and expensive in many places (.especially Sorrento and the Amalfi coast). Also there is the risk of traffic accidents and traffic fines enforced by the many traffic enforcement hidden cameras in Italy.

The places you mentioned you want to visit are well served by trains. But the final decision is up to you.
