Travelling to ancestor hometowns in Sicily and Calabria

Looking to travel to Sicily and Calabria next year to see our ancestors hometowns. Probably 10-14 days. San Giuseppe Jato (just south of Moreale) and Serradifalco (south of San Cataldo) in Sicily and Decollatura in Calabria. Any suggestions on an itinery and/or info on the towns? Would like to visit a few wineries in Sicily as well.

Fly to Palermo and rent a car at the airport.

Start with San Giuseppe Jato (http://www.comune.sangiuseppejato.pa.it/, http://www.palermotourism.com/datad/comuni/comunea.asp?id=429)

Serradifalco is near Enna (http://www.comune.serradifalco.cl.it/, http://sicilia.indettaglio.it/eng/comuni/cl/serradifalco/serradifalco.html).

Continue towards Catania and Messina for Reggio, or take the autostrada north towards Campofelice and drive the A20 along the northern coast to Messina and Reggio.

You'll be passing the Regaleali winery.

David,

I go to Calabria every year to visit my family. They live in Nicastro and Sambiase in Lamezia Terme. Calabria, in general, is a poverty area, but very pristine and beautiful. If you speak any Italian it will be very helpful as almost no one speaks English. I do not know where Decollatura ia located. The cost of living is substantially lower than northern Italy. There is an international airport located in Lamezia Terme and an airport in Reggio Calabria.

There are ferries between Sicily and the mainland. The one across the Straight of Messina goes to Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria.

Buon viaggio,
