Travelling in Rome with a 1 year-old

My husband and I are living in Germany with our 1 year-old and trying to travel as much as possible. We are leaving for a long weekend in Rome in two weeks and looking for insight into how casual dining resturants react to small children. We just got back from Paris having learned that Parisians do not take small children out (even to cafes!) and want to be sure we don't repeat that experiance!

All advice welcome.

Cheers - Melynda

Children are welcomed and fussed over everywhere, no worries. The only thing to keep in mind is that not all restaurants have high chairs and many don't have a good place in the bathroom for changing diapers, though if you ask I've found many places will bend over backwards to accomodate us.

Our kids weren't born yet when we were last in Rome -- but my wife was pregnant with our first so we tended to notice 'children stuff'.

They were everywhere. The street in front of the Forum / Colosseum is closed to traffic on Sundays -- and that part-time pedestrian haven was buzzing with little people.

The many fountains and such seem to act like 'family magnets' -- you'll have a great time.

...and... the Parisians don't know what they are missing... we take our kids with us everywhere.

We were in Rome last April with our 2 young children - 18 months and 3, at the time. Italians are very family friendly - everyone went overboard to make our family feel at home. If anything, you may feel that your child gets fawned over too much!! We didn't have any problems at restaurants and we ate at a wide range of places - they were amazingly willing to accommodate us - even with our two strollers and all the rest of our gear. Have a wonderful time! We had so much fun that we are headed back later this year!
