travelling in calabria via public transportation

hello all,
working on my itinerary now and trying to figure out if it is even possible to take a bus and/or train to santa severina, zagarise and
taverna. i am willing to take taxis but only for distances of less than 15 km. it would be a shame to miss these small towns/villages as they all seem to have byzantine and romanesque churches that i would love to visit. i am basing myself in reggio calabria for a couple of day and then willing to move to any location that is close to or has better access to the above-mentioned sites. tips and suggestions are most welcome!
thanks.

Have you tried the website RometoRio?

Are you flying into Reggio Calabria? Sharing your entry/departure points might help, as others can suggest places to access transit.

The are villages up in the mountains, so obviously there would be no trains going there. The railway runs along the coast.
I'm sure there are buses, but they are probably not frequent and limited to commute hours to serve the local community (therefore Sat and Sunday service would be scant or non existent). Rent a car!

alomaker, sorry I can't help with public transportation in Calabria. It didn't exist to the extent we needed in 2019. We rented a car in Naples when our RS South of Italy tour ended. We drove to Mongrassano after checking in to our B&B in San Marco Argentano. Mongrassano was so small that it didn't have a hotel. My sister-in-law's grandparents were from there so she wanted to visit the village they emigrated from. We could have taken a train from Naples to either Paola or Consenza but we would have had to rent a car from either. Since we were returning the car the next day late Sunday afternoon and had to catch a train from Naples to Venice Monday morning, rental from Naples airport was our best option.
You will probably be off the main roads; the rural roads to the villages are very narrow, windy and hilly. It is beautiful country and the people are very friendly if you try to speak a few words of Italian or have ancestors from the region. Enjoy your visit!

thank you all for your responses.

@valedelphia: my entry into italy and calabria is set. flying in from DUS to NAP then taking a train to reggio calabria and staying there for 3 nights before moving on. yes, i am very familiar with rome2rio and have been on the site for hours!

@Roberto da firenze: i don't drive so renting a car is not an option for me. yes, i am looking at bus/train services and short cab rides. thanks for the tip though.

@horsewoofie: thanks for describing your journey! between a few lessons in italian and translator apps, i managed quite well last year in sicily.

i realize confining myself to just public transportation in calabria is very limiting. i suppose i will have to miss some of those places i mentioned. on the other hand i have 50 days to roam and everywhere from puglia to tuscany is beckoning!
