We are planning to travel to Italy (Venice, Florence & Rome) in August. Is this a good time to go?
The quote from the tripadvisor website, given in Steve's post immediately above this post, is worth reading twice.
When we travelled in August two years ago with our teenage son, it was very hot, humid and crowded. At that time, we did not have a choice for time of year. When we retire (forced to in a few months), we are going to go in the fall or early spring. Others on this forum say it's a great time to visit.
Since you asked the question ..............it's the absolute worst time to go.
But, going when it's a bit on the miserable side sure beats not going at all. No matter what it's like, you can live with it.
We are heading in August also. Its our first trip to Italy and its the only time we can go.(last week of August and fist week of September) I saw all the posts on the heat and how bad it is. I'm from New Jersey and August gets into the low 90s here. I can deal with that. Or is is like Florida in August?
We always are there in August as we visit a small village for their Festa.
Yes it is hot. Yes it is humid. But it is still a good time to go. If I had a choice, I'd go in September or October.
Definetly Hot!!!!!!If you go,prepar to boil...Bring the loosest clothing possible. The cities seem hotter too.Make sure your hotel has good air conditioning,in fact i would call ahead to make sure..Because sometimes in Italy they have these little air conditioners that don't work so well and of course, the locals such as my friends there in the counrty don't believe in air conditioning only windows...I actually went down south the end of September one year and it was still boiling..Don't want to discourage though, but I have spent months there:)
Thank you all for your comments.
It's not the best time to go, but I don't think it is terrible, either. Yes, it is hot. But hotels tend to drop their prices so you can stay in a nicer place (with AC) for less. Be very careful around the 15th. Many restaurants close for the holiday, so your dining options will be restricted.
It would be easy for the uninitiated to under-estimate the impact of Ferragosto, more than just the one day (Aug. 15).
