Travelling from Rome to Sorrento--please advise?

Hello, younger couple travelling from Rome to Sorrento here. We are willing to rent a car and drive, but would public transportation be more advisable?

If renting a car, are there particular "preferred" locations to pick up the car in Rome, or drop it off in Sorrento?

If public transportation, are there any DIRECT trains/buses with no stops?

Or, are there any private drivers that the RS community would recommend?

Thanks!!!

No need to rent a car, that would only be an expensive headache
Direct fast train to Napoli Centrale then transfer to the local Circumvesuviana to Sorrento
Or depending on time of year and the schedule there is the Campania Express

Or you can hire a driver to pick you up at Napoli Centrale to drive you to Sorrento for about 100 euros

I believe there is also a direct bus from FCO to Sorrento

There are many discussions here on this topic

Public transport is the best option for most people. Having a car in Sorrento can be a pain. There is a direct bus from Rome to Sorrento a couple times a day. Most will take a train to Naples and then the Circumvesuvianna -- private commuter train -- to Sorrento. Those trains run frequently so about any schedule will work. There is no such thing as a nonstop train anywhere in Europe unless you are only going from one town to another. Trains stop along the route -- better question is the number of train changes.

Just want to add that there is also a ferry from Naples to Sorrento. You have options!

I wouldn't rent a car or hire private driver from Rome to Sorrento. The distance a driver would have to cover - both ways - would make it VERY expensive.

There are no direct trains. As stated above, you can take a "fast " train to Naples, and the Circumvesuviana commuter to Sorrento from there. You could also hire a driver for the Naples> Sorrento leg.

Also look at Flixbus and Marozzi: both offer direct bus service to Sorrento from Rome Tiburtina station. It

It looks like Marozzi makes some short stops along the way; not sure about Flixbus but I wouldn't sweat it.

Editing to add: yes there is ferry service from Naples to Sorrento but it would mean transferring from Napoli Centrale to the port via taxi or public transit. https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/getting-to-sorrento-italy

Kathy is correct. I would not recommend the ferry. It is pain with luggage get from the train station to the harbor and it is not as frequent as the train. It is pretty ride but do it on a nice day when visiting Naples
