4 of us would like to wander around our grandparents birth place and have lunch there the day before our tour starts in Naples. Wondering about hiring a driver versus taking a train? Would appreciate your opinions
Train is inexpensive and quick.
Driver will cost more. (100-120 euros each way, plus wait time?)
Are you familiar/comfortable with train travel in Italy?
Search this forum for drivers in Amalfi/Sorrento- there are dozens of threads
We used this company for transfers in the area.

Check the schedules carefully on trenitalia.com. You'll probably want to take one of the departures from the Piazza Garibaldi station. There are a few routings with different departure points that include a very fast, high-cost train, only save about 15 or 20 minutes and require a transfer.
Vietri is a very hilly town. The train station is very high; there's an elevator that will take you from there down to the commercial area of town.
The train is inexpensive and easy.
Just to throw this out, carwhite56, but there is a ferry runs from Salerno down the Amalfi coast stopping in Vietri Sul Mar as the first stop. The stop for VSM is probably 5 minutes by ferry from Salerno but if you are actively tracing your family history I don't know if approaching the city by sea might fit into that history somehow or is Salerno and other cities along the coast might also figure into that.
So depending on the time of year (the ferries are seasonal) you might be able to approach the city - and how ever much of the rest of the Amalfi coast interest you - by sea. If you were starting in Sorrento rather than Naples I would recommend getting the ferry around the Amalfi coast ending at VSM but doing it to and from Naples would probably be an all day affair of travel logistics.
Enjoy Amalfi - especially given your familial connection to it,
