Travelling dolomites with toddler in April

Hello all.
We have a toddler who will be 16 months in April. We are planning to spend 2 or 3 nights in Dolomites. Not planning for hiking or skiing. Just wish to stay at one place with scenic views, spend some relaxing time and do sightseeing. (We plan to do longer Dolomites trip in summer some other time )

Is it recommended to travel to Dolomites in April with baby, considering the chances of difficult road travel due to snowfall and low temperatures? If yes, which place should we stay and what places should we be going for sightseeing? How should we travel ? What precautions should we take?

If not recommended, is Lake Como a good alternative or should we go somewhere else? (considering that we already plan to visit Rome, Amalfi, Florence, Venice in our itinerary)

Thanks in advance.

Lake Como is one of my favorite places, so I always recommend going there, however, there are steps everywhere. Strollers are difficult to use, so you would need a baby body carrier.
How long is your trip total? Do you have lodging booked? April is a very busy time in Italy, and most travelers book 8-9 months is advance. Availability may influence your itinerary.
With so many destinations, I'm assuming you're planning a three week trip?
Have a wonderful time. Safe travels.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.
My itinerary is of 16 nights. I know that clubbing Dolomites or Lake Como in this short duration will make it hectic but I am unable to resist visiting Dolomites after looking at the photos. Also, my next Italian trip is years away. So want to make the most of it.
Also, I forgot to mention that I will be in Venice in last week of April. Can I plan 2/3 nights in Cortina/Val Gardena/Corvora or some other place in Dolomites during this time ?

Before committing to the Dolomites in April, I would look at the gondola opening hours. You really need to get up into the mountains for those epic views. We stayed in Santa Cristina and from the valley you wouldn’t even imagine the views that you get from Col Raiser, Seceda or Seiser Alm. It looks like many close in early April and don’t open again until June.

Are you driving? Those twisty Dolomites roads can be icy well into April. And not only will some of the lifts be shut down, the small family-run hotels will be too—-many take a much-needed break after Easter until sometime in May.

Instead, assuming you have a car, I suggest you look at Lago di Garda, specifically the town of Malcescine near the north end of the lake. This is where we went in mid-April a few years ago after visiting Venice. I too wanted to isit the Dolomites—I had been there before in summer, and wanted to share the beauty with my husband. But I realized how impractical that was, and chose Malcescine instead.

We loved it there—the little town is charming and the views over the lake and the mountains rising right from water’s edge are stunning. And guess what—-there is a big gondola that goes right from town up to the summit of Monte Baldo. On a clear day you can see some Dolomites from there (but there may still be snow and mud on the walking paths).

You won’t be able to swim in the lake, but your toddler can play on the beach. The town will not be crowded like it is in summer, and prices should be at their low-season level.

Try Hotel Castello right on the beach below the castle for a nice treat.

They are open in April and room prices start at €153 for small room with balcony.

Your suggestion looks perfect and suits my requirements. I'll make it to Malcescine for a two night stay and skip Dolomites and Lake Como , as going to Lake Como anyways would make my trip very hectic. Thank you very much.

Any suggestions on which rental car agency I should opt for at Venice and what are the expedited rental charges for a hatchback/sedan ? Also, is baby car seats mandate enforced strictly in this part of the country ? My baby does not like being tied up in a seat.

I suggest you skip the Dolomites. Babies don't do well in high altitudes and may get really car sick.

I’m not sure where you are from, but car seat laws in Europe are more strict than in the US. They require kids to be in car seats until they are 12 years old. Your 16 month old most certainly needs to be in a car seat.

We have done the Dolomites before and were hoping to go back in early May but everything is still closed so we have had to change our plans. So April is bound to still be closed and snowy.
