Travelling by Train/Bus - where to stay in Tuscany

I have 2 nights free in early September and I would like to go somewhere in Tuscany that is close to the train station. Have been looking at San Gimignano, Siena and Montepulciano. I am heading to Orvieto from this location. I don't drive so renting a car is not an option! All help or suggestions for places, hotels, B&B's etc are welcomed!!! Thank you!

Jacqueline, The easiest option for transportation will likely be Siena. The station is at the bottom of the hill, so you'd need to take a Taxi or Bus up to the town. Where will you be prior to that stop? If you can get a reservation, I would highly recommend Albergo Bernini. It's located in an 800-year old house, and in a great location in Siena. Do you need lodging suggestions for Orvieto? For travel in September, it would be a good idea to get some reservations in place SOON! Happy travels!

Of the three locations you list, only Siena has a train station. However, there is great bus transportation to many places in Tuscany from there. Note however, that visiting Tuscany by bus usually involves bus changes and time between buses. For example, many travelers want to see Volterra and San Gimignano in the same day. Sounds easy and can be done but the day is long and you won't see as much of the two hilltowns as you may like. Same with Montepulciano and Montalcino. Worse yet is trying to do this on a Sunday. Bus schedules are reduced on Sundays. If Siena is your choice, you might look into some tours of these areas.

Thank you both! I just found a good connection via train to Poggibonsi and a SITA bus to San Gimignano. Now I just have to find good accomodations in the town :) Any suggestions?

Good, Jacqueline. I'm sure you'll enjoy San Gimignano. We stayed at Carla's Rooms and had a good experience.

Jacqueline, at the train station in Siena you can take a city bus into town. The tourist information office at the Siena station is extremely helpful, make a stop there for very explicit instructions.

Thanks, but we aren't going to Siena now just from La Spezia to Poggibonsi and taking the SITA bus from there to San Gimignano. What I am needing now is Hotel accommodations for San Gimignano. Thanks again everyone!
