We are renting a car in Siena and travelling to Volterra and then on to Manarola . Should we go back to Siena to deposit the car or somewhere closer to the cinque terreÉ . Is the driving difficult between Volterra and la Spezia or LivornoÉ

We drove from Manarola to Volterra last October. If you plan on droppiong the rental car off, I believe you can do that in LaSpezia. The roads between Volterra and LaSpezia are mostly autostrada. When not on the high speed road the secondary roads are no problem at all. You can take the train from LaSpezia to Manarola.

Gail, As the previous reply mentioned, dropping the car in La Spezia is probably the best idea. A car isn't really all that useful for travel in the Cinque Terre, especially as some of the roads were damaged in the Oct. 25 floods. Are you aware of the usual "caveats" regarding driving in Italy?
