Traveling with CPAP

Will the machine work on 230 V?

My CPAP is a Resmed Airsense 10, I'm under the impression that it can work in Italy with just an adapter for the plug.

I have traveled with a CPAP for years. I check a roller bag, and put my CPAP in my carryon, because I don't use the humidifier portion while traveling. I brought the whole thing in its own case the first year--yes, it doesn't count as it's medical and I was never asked for documentation.

Sometimes, you will be asked to remove your machine at security, but that is the only issue I've ever experienced.

My CPAP is dual voltage, so a simple plug adapter and an extension cord are all I need to use it everywhere. You will be surprised how many of us there are!

I have traveled internationally to Paris, Prague and most recently, Rome with my Resmed Airsense 10 (new to CPAPs). Just use a Type E or F plug adapter and you are good to go - its dual voltage.

As for carrying - we flew to Rome and back on Delta and they had no issues with me carrying a medical device as a third item. Wish I could say the same for Air France and Czech Air - they weren't quite so accommodating so I wound up having to gate check a bag. Pretty sure you will be fine on all US based carriers departing and returning

Was stopped by a Delta Gate agent flying to Alaska about my third item when she saw the tag and waved me through.

I would contact the airline(s), especially foreign based carriers, you are flying and just confirm whether they will allow a third item if its a medical device.

I have flown for years with a CPAP. I have taken 2 different trips to Italy with it, and just recently came back from a 2 week trip to Italy with my CPAP.

If you are flying a US based airline, you won't have any issues. I have never packed my CPAP inside another bag. It is always allowed as a medical device by US law. They can’t prohibit you from carrying it above and beyond any regular baggage restrictions. As mentioned above, other countries airlines may have different rules that apply. I have never needed any kind of documentation. The airlines are very familiar with CPAP machines and they are readily recognized as a medical device.

You should never check you cpap, even inside another bag. Suitcases go missing, are delayed, destroyed. Such a necessary item should always be with you.

There is no issue as long as its a US based carrier. Like I had posted earlier, foreign carriers are not subject to the same rules and may or may not allow a medical device as a third item - I found out that Air France and Czech Air would not so I had to check one of my bags.......

One point to mention is that if you plan on using the CPAP during the flight, you may have to obtain prior approval from the airline. They will probably insist that Airplane mode be activated on the device. AFAIK, the ResMed Airsense 10 does have the capability of Airplane mode, which will turn the cellular data transceiver "Off".

Our tickets were purchased through Delta, but upon further review the flight to Rome is actually Alitalia and we are on Air France (through Delta) on the return, so I will check the restrictions with those airlines. I appreciate the help from all of you.
