Traveling with a 3-year old

My husband and I, our 3-year old boy, and my parents (in their 70's) are interested in spending 2 weeks in Italy this spring. I suggested Cinque Terra as it has potential for beach/ocean play as well as fun train rides, but we are open to any suggestions for family friendly locations as well as specific places to stay with an active, romping little boy. With our family configuration, we are more interested in activities than shopping and antiquities. We appreciate all input!

The Cinque Terre towns are a little tough for kids. Rocks, wet steps, etc. Vernazza has a great little playground, but even it is a little hard and concrete if you're accustomed to US playgrounds with rubber mats and the like.

The CT is beautiful and worth some days. But with a 3 year old (we just went with a 4 year old) I'd suggest Lucca (parks on the ramparts) and Venice (no cars and a cool playground hidden near the train station).
