Traveling with 85 year old (in Lucca)

We will be going to Italy this May with our dad. He can walk some but does get tired. We will have a car most of the trip but will also take cabs as needed. The largest portion of our trip will be in Lucca. Any suggestions for best places to take him? He is happy to sit at a cafe and soak in the culture and visit with people near him. We will be doing a few day trips out of Lucca. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thank you in advance.....

If you can edit your post, add Lucca to the title! I, unfortunately cannot help you on this one, because I've not yet been to Lucca, but people who DO know Lucca might not look inside your thread because Lucca isn't the title, the 85 year old is.

Lucca is fairly flat, except for access to the wall that surrounds the town (accessible by stairs or ramps). There are lots of piazze with cafes. If you contact the TT office they can probably give you details on how to get around. You might consider a walking cane with a fold-up seat attached.

Janet, I have been to Lucca twice and also going there May 12 and 13th. Lucca is the perfect place for your dad, it is flat and walled so very few cars are able to get in and out. Are you picking up a car and driving there? You will have to drop him off at where you are staying, as parking is outside the walls and very limited. We had a car the first time we were there and never moved it, as the train station is very close to the walls and on the Pisa-Florence line, so you can go anywhere by train from there. I love Lucca and hopefully you and your dad will also. Where are you staying?

Thanks for the replies. We will be there at the same time... we are actually staying within the walls and it has a designated parking space. Hope you have a great trip.

The piazza San Michelle or amphitheatro are great for sitting and just people watching. Actually you will find Lucca is very friendly and a great place to stay. We are staying just down from San Michelle. My dad is older and I fully understand the difficulties of taking him places. The train station is very close to the walls itself and the train will take you anywhere.
