I have been through Tuscany several times and would like to see more of italy. I was thinking of starting in Livorno and traveling toward sorrento. Any thoughts or suggestions?

How much time do you have?

Where have you already been?

How do you plan to travel?

By what means of transportation? A car would be useful to visit some nice places along the Tyrrhenian coast. If you say west coast nobody in Italy will understand what you are taking about, and may actually think you are talking about California. Italians know their coasts only by the name of the seas: Tyrrhenian Coast, Adriatic Coast, Ligurian Coast, Ionian Coast.

Sounds like you’re thinking of seeing more of Tuscany, before continuing southward. Would you be flying in to Pisa, then reaching Livorno from there? If you haven’t been to Lucca, it’s close to Pisa as well, and we enjoyed several days and nights there 2 months ago. It still has its town walls, and you can bike (or walk) the wide pathway along the top of the walls.

Continuing farther south, we stayed a week in the Super Tuscan Bolgheri wine region, staying in Castagneto Carducci, a (still) fairly off-the-beaten-track hilltown. Cecina was a very nice daytrip one day, and there’s a great beach there, and at Donoratico.

If you fancy an island visit, Elba is a short ferry ride from Piombino. We looked at doing that, but it didn’t turn out to fit into our itinerary … Next time. For many, it’s apparently all about beaches, but there are also Napoleon Exile sights, and biking/hiking, too.

A bit father south, the Etruscan tombs and ruins site (also with ancient Roman ruins) at Parco Archeologico Baratti outside Populonia was fascinating, and we’ll worth a visit.

All the above is still Tuscany, before you venture farther south, past Rome and to Sorrento. We stayed in Sorrento for several nights 10 years ago, and it was a good base for exploring Capri off the coast, and daytrips to Naples, Pompeii, and Herculaneum.

I spent ten days between Massa Marittima/Vetulonia and Orbetello/Pitigliano. Google "Maremma" for more info this area.
I recall the book A Culinary Traveller in Tuscany: Exploring and Eating off the Beaten Track having some coastal drives, including around Cecina.

Elba is a short ferry ride off the west (Ligurian) coast

Sailing from Liguria You'd end up in Corsica: Elba is a short ferry ride off the Tuscany's Coast. The ferry port is in Piombino, here:

Anyway I agree with those who suggested to visit the Maremma area along the Thirrenyan coast, the small Regional Reserve with its beaches and wet areas is lovely https://parco-maremma.it/en/

As many already mentioned, Maremma is the most beautiful area on the Tuscan coast (you can also define Coasts by the name of the region, if you want to be more specific on the part of the larger Tyrrhenian coast).

Maremma is the area of southern Tuscany and Northern Latium comprising the western portions of the provinces of Livorno, Grosseto, and Viterbo.

Below is a good official website for Maremma.

Close to Livorno there is also Castiglioncello, a nice sea resort. Worth a R&R visit on your way further south to Maremma.

In Latium the area near Sperlonga is also nice.

And of course everybody knows about the area near Naples/Sorrento. That area is fully covered in Rick’s guides and in this forum as well. Just use the search function and you will find plenty.
