We want to rent apts or 4 bedroom villa on the outskirts of Sienna to use as
a base for day trips to surrounding cities/towns. Possibility of children with
grandchildren visiting for a week at a time. Suggestions for accommodations,
sights, activities with 5,7, 10 yr olds in mind.

I can suggest Villa Arnilul near San Gimignano. Not too close to Siena but it might work. Google it.

I would take the kids on a train somewhere. Easy in Italy. Pisa isn't far.
