Hi Benita. You must be named after a famous Italian Prime Minister from Predappio. 4 hours in Rome are really too short to make any kind of Pass a worthwhile investment. Just pick one thing you want visit (e.g. Vatican or Forum/Colosseum) and leave it at that.

I agree with previous poster. Roma pass won't be worth it unless you have a couple days. If you can book the underground tour that fits into your timeline, do it. We just returned from that and it was wonderful and for you would save you having to wait in line. For Venice, I would recommend just walking around and exploring. That is what I like the most about Venice.

Given your short times in both Rome and Venice, are you by any chance on a cruise? If so, get Rick Steves Mediterranean Cruise Ports. The book has all the details of getting into the cities from the ports, and (whether or not you are on a cruise) suggestions on how to maximize limited time. He also has details on how the gondolas work. Don't worry, you don't have to "find" them, as they're everywhere. The only catch is the price.

For Venice, i'd suggest getting a vaporetto pass. It will be activated the first time you use it, so you can decide how long a pass to get based on when you'll activate. It can be the quickest way to get between sites, since you have so little time. I'm not certain of the cost for single rides, but I think it may be 6.5 E. So the pass becomes worthwhile quickly. If you'll have some type of MP3 player or smart phone, the Rick Steves free audio tour is a nice way to see the grand canal, well timed to the vaporetto route. You can also use it to get to islands of the lagoon, if those interest you... Murano, Burano, Torcello, etc.
