How much advance planning must I do to visit Pompeii-going with 3 others in early January Do I need an advance train reservation from Naples to Pompeii? -also any recommendations for finding a reasonable tour guide?

The Circumvesuviana operates like a city 'subway', no reservations. Just show up for a scheduled departures

The RS audio tour is what we used for our visit. Did not feel like we missed out, by not having a live guide

There are tour guides standing around the entrance. Or go with Mondo .

We used a tour guide at the gate. Very pleased. You can customize the tour to your interests and the length. There were four of us and we opted for about three hours. Personally don't think there is better solution than a live guide that you can interact with.

I was at Pompeii yesterday. I used the Citysightseeing shuttle from Naples. It was 15 euros round trip. You do have only 1 time to return, depending on your departure time. I just used Rick’s audio guide.

Because I used Rick's guidebook, I didn't need a guide. Can anyone quote some of the prices they paid for a "by the entrance" guide?
