Traveling to Northern Italy and Southern Switzerland, I have travel questions

Hi, We are flying into Milan and staying in Chiavenna, Italy. We want to travel into Switzeland, at least to Soglio, possibly one or two other towns. We are looking to use the Bernina trains for travel between Chiavenna and Saglia but I want to know if we should rent a car or if transport from the Milan airport to Chiavenna is available. Any advice or suggestions regarding the trip and how best to get around would be helpful. A couple years ago I spend a month in Sicily and found I could get everywhere I needed to go with trains and busses. Thanks for any info, the trip will be 2 weeks long. We will primarily be in Northern Italy. Probably will want to see Lake Como area as well.

Well, if you are going to Chiavenna, you take the Malpensa Express Train (assuming that is the Milan airport you are arriving at) to Milano Centrale station, then change to a train to Chiavenna, which requires a train change at Colico. You will travel along the entire Eastern shore of Lake Como.

Saglia is a bit of a mystery. There is also Berguen, which is sometimes referred to as Sagliaz. It is on the Albula rail line that the Bernina and Glacier Express trains use. There is an hourly bus from Chiavenna to St Moritz where you can get trains to that area. That bus also passes through Soglio.

lcagnina, you appear to be a victim of mistyping.

"Saglia" doesn't exist. I checked the Swiss topographical map and I can find Saglias, Sagliains and Sagliaz, all small places in Graubünden, farms or areas of hillside.
There is also a "Soglio", just on the Swiss side of the border near Chiavenna (click here for map)
You are going to have to double check. Is this is a farm, what village is it part of? Or what is the postcode?

"Probably will want to see Lake Cuomo area as well." - I am guessing you mean Lake Como

As above, Milan Malpensa airport to Chiavenna is possible by train. And Chiavenna has a Swiss bus to St Moritz. Timetable here: https://www.fahrplanfelder.ch/fileadmin/fap_pdf_fields/2020/90.604.pdf
It also has 3 buses per day over the Splügen Pass into Switzerland. This would be scenic. Here: https://www.fahrplanfelder.ch/fileadmin/fap_pdf_fields/2020/90.561.pdf

Any village in Switzerland, it will be accessible either by train, or train + connecting bus. A rented car is not necessary. If it is really out of the way, a car may be useful to tour the area.

Please come back and clarify.

I fixed my two spelling errors :-). Also, has anyone taken the "my way" tours? I have never taken a tour, I always just kinda go wherever but Rick Steves has one tour that is a lot of what we want to do and it is a "my way" ... just curious.

There is a bus more or less every hour from Chiavenna to Soglio. Soglio is on the side of a mountain, so you change buses at Promontogna Posta to get up the side of the mountain. Takes 41 minutes and costs 11.20 CHF.
