Traveling to Italy with tennis rackets

Does anyone have any tips or warnings about traveling to Italy with tennis rackets? Leaving them at home is not an option for reasons I won't go into. :-) I'm curious about potential problems getting them on the airplane, if we can avoid checking them. We're flying a combination of Delta, Alitalia and Air France. Thanks.

As you may or may not know, tennis is extremely popular in Italy, second only to Soccer. Many italians travel with their tennis rackets as well. This is great news for you because nearly every train station, restaurant, museum, etc... has a place to check your tennis racket at the door. You should have no problems. The only warning I would give is watch out for the gypsies, they hate tennis and anyone who carries a tennis racket. Happy Travels.

Just to be clear, we're not going to be carrying them around with us everywhere we go. We'll leave them in the apartment/hotel most of the time. I was wondering mostly about airplane issues.

Michael, After looking at the "Sporting Goods" section on the TSA website, I really believe that Tennis Rackets will NOT be allowed for carry-on, so you should be prepared to check them. EVERY item listed is in the carry-on column says NO (although Tennis Rackets are not specifically mentioned). Due to the fact that you'll be flying with two European airlines (which often have more restrictive baggage rules), I think it's likely the rackets will have to be checked. Happy travels!

Michael, "It's surprising to me how none of these airlines nor the TSA specifically address tennis rackets." I suspect the reason for that is that Tennis Rackets are an item that they encounter VERY infrequently. This is the first time in my 60+ years that I've ever heard of anyone packing Rackets along for a trip to Europe. Happy travels!

Thanks, Ken. It's surprising to me how none of these airlines nor the TSA specifically address tennis rackets.

On the plus side, maybe this will make us look less like tourists. :-)
