traveling to Italy from Aug 8-25th

My friend and I are traveling from Venice to Lake Como. Do you think it is better for us to rent a car in Venice and drive to Lake Como, or is a better idea to take a train to Lake Como and rent a car once we are there? Please keep in mind that we may stop at the Dolomites on the way to Lake Como, if we have time.
Also we were thinking about purchasing the rail and drive promotion. Have you heard of this promotion, and if so is it a good idea?

For seeing the sights at Lake Como, having a car is a headache. To do all the things at Lake Como shown in Rick's DVDs and book, you cruise around the lake on the ferry system.
