I traveled to Italy twice in 2013 or 2014 and used RS Italy 2012 book. There was no information on Genoa. Yet I really enjoyed the city and food and traveled via train from Milan to Genoa to Cinque Terre. I don't see any information on Genoa in the current RS books.
Can you tell me why? Am I looking in the wrong place in the RS guides.
Thank You.
Rick only covers certain areas that are popular tourist destinations, and Genoa is not one of them. Try a different guide book outfit.
The Italian book is already at the maximum size the printers can handle. Add Genoa and something else has to be cut.
Early on Rick's books covered more or less the places shown in his TV show, because those shows created an interest in seeing these places. Remember when Germany, Austria, and Switzerland used to be in one book?
Now he has expanded the books and created new ones. But they are still not comprehensive. He focuses on places he deems most worthy of visiting, especially ones with major art or history connections. Or "back door" places he found in his travels, like Cinque Terre, and Gimmelwald in Switzerland. Or is a major travel hub one is likely to pass through ( like Zurich).
Apparently Genoa has neither appeal. But there are lots of places in Italy where one can eat very well, and have a nice time exploring on one's own. Note that he does not include Trieste or Turin either.
I think Genoa is worth a night or two if you are in the area. We visited en route from Rome to Nice to break up the trip. Enjoyed a nice afternoon, a couple of good meals. It is very untouristed so an opportunity to experience an Italian city not overrun by Americans or Germans. Still, I would not be likely to base there for more than a couple of nights.
Than you all for taking the time to respond and your take on why Genoa is not covered. I know lonely planet covers it but I was not understanding why there is no coverage of Genoa in RS books.
Ciao!
Seems to me that Genoa is a less tourist town and more a working town. Although, it has a great aquarium & the medieval waterfront is of some interest, Genoa is more like Bologna a place where Italians live and work in industries other than tourism. IMO - RS concentrates more on the tourism location
