I am heading to Assisi from Rome by train with reservations for lodging in Assisi. I am hearing such good things about Orvieto. Is it possible to get off the train in Orvieto to tour the town and then get back on a train heading to Assisi on the same day? I will have luggage so could I leave my luggage at the train station?
I wouldn't do it. Orvieto is extremely charming but then so are 100 other towns in Italy. Don't fall victim to the "I've got to see it all" syndrome while you're in Italy. Assisi is stunningly beautiful so go enjoy it. Here are some photos I took in Assisi in case you're interested: Assisi in May 2008 (And FWIW the Orvieto train station does not have a left luggage facility.)
Thank you so much!
Your pictures are grand....can't wait to get there. I will be getting there Nov 9, so it will look different!
You can IF you are traveling on a Regional train (no seat reservation). The ticket is good for six hours so as long as you complete you trip in the time period you can get on and off as often as you like. Do not know about luggage storage at the station.
You need two separate tickets. Orvieto is not on the ROMA - ASSISI route. The train from Rome to Assisi goes through the Roma-Orte-Foligno-Ancona line. At Foligno, in many cases, you will need to change trains and take another train from Foligno to Assisi. Some trains don't require any changes in Foligno, and take you directly to Assisi, they are the St Francis Express trains to take pilgrims from the Vatican to St. Francis' birthplace.
What you could do however, is visit Spoleto and/or Spello along that route. Two marvelous towns.
