We are starting in Rome - 3 days, then to Pompeii 1 day - and then Sorrento - 1 day. Then we are crossing to the other side of Italy to explore Altamura, Ostuni, Alberobello, Carovigno etc.. - (I was stationed in San Vito, Italy in the 1980's.) We are having a problem on deciding when and where to rent a car. Should we take the train from Rome to Naples - then rent a car for the rest of our journey? or should we wait until we are done touring Pompeii and Sorrento - then rent the car to drive across Italy? We are concerned about parking in Sorrento and car thefts. Any advise would be appreciated. thanks!!
I would not pick up the car until departing Sorrento. Driving in that area is not much fun and you'd pay for parking. I assume that Sorrento is your hotel base for both nights, not just one. Either the Circumvesuviana or the tourist-oriented Campania Express will get you to the town center.
Thank you Laura! I'm starting to look at rental cars and finding that no automatic transmissions are available from Sorrento area. Plus we will being traveling with 5 people.... so a full size vehicle is needed.
Take the 10 euro http://www.curreriviaggi.it/autolinee/images/AUTOLINEE_CURRERI.pdf bus from Sorrento to the airport and rent the car there.
