Traveling through the Airport in Rome

I made a mistake in booking an activity in Rome and I have very little time between landing and the activity. Would it save time getting out of the airport to carry on my luggage versus checking it? I don't remember how much time it takes to go through customs and such before you get your bag and I don't have much time to wait! Mea Culpa!!

Yes, of course it will save time if you do carry on instead of checking a bag. Customs isn't an issue. You will need to clear Passport Control (Immigration), after deplaning. How do you plan on getting into Rome? Do you have a plan B if your plane is late arriving?

I do have transportation waiting for me at baggage claim. If I am late, the tour will just be junked for us.

Your transportation will not be waiting at baggage claim

Should be further along in Arrivals Hall

If every minute counts, do carryon only. That way you know you can walk away right after passport control.

It might save you time if passport control is speedy; I can’t say how long the checked bags took for me because the passport control line took almost an hour and the bags were just waiting on the carousel. However that was at night, sounds like you would be arriving earlier in the day.

Carry on does remove one variable from the equation so if you don’t need to check the bag then might as well.

If every minute counts, remember to use the bathroom on the airplane rather than waiting for one in the airport --- sounds obvious, but I've forgotten this several times and regretted it. Other people will have the same plan and there will be a line for the airplane bathroom at the last minute before you are required to return to your seat. Good luck!
