Hi all - I am traveling to Lake Como for some alone R&R. Wondering if there are suggestions for single travelers - which area? I like to be walkable to shopping, restaurants, transportation. I've been reading about Menaggio, Bellagio, Como, they all seem wonderful, but I only have 2.5 days and want to make the most of it. Thanks for your suggestions!
Rick Steves recommends the town of Varenna on Lake Como, and after spending five days, some with rain, there this past May it seems to fit your bill. It has a small town feel, is walkable with a lovely promenade, restaurants, and is a hub for the ferry around the mid-lake region. For shopping, you can take the ferry to Bellagio. Even with 2 1/2 days of rain we enjoyed our time there.
Yes, Varenna is perfect for alone R&R time. It is very easy to hop on the ferry to Bellagio if you get bored, for shopping and a more touristy experience, and it is beautiful! Never been to Menaggio..maybe next time :)
I also travel solo most of the time and would also recommend Varenna, as it's a great home base for exploring the mid-lake area. It's also a great location for "R & R". If you're interested in shopping, Bellagio offers more posh stores for that. Both Varenna and Bellagio have some great restaurants.
The RS Italy guidebook has lots of suggestions for accommodations and restaurants.
Thanks everyone! Sounds like Varenna would be ideal.
