We will be traveling next month and going from Rome to Orvieto, Lucca , Florence then back to Rome. How is the driving from Rome to Orvieto. Is the train a better option? We have scheduled 2-4 nights in each place but my main concern is the traffic getting around Rome and Florence.
Kathleen, all of these locations are well served by train. They're faster, and you do not want a car in Rome or Florence anyway. You also can't drive into the center of Orvieto or inside the city walls of Lucca (last I knew; happy to be corrected if that's not the case.) Leaving anything at all you don't want to lose in an unattended vehicle is also not recommended.
No question, take the trains. That way ALL of you can watch the scenery instead of the road!

Travel by train-no question
Use the train -- cheaper and more convenient. If you were spending time in the country side at B&B, then a car might be useful. But most cities have restricted driving zones that almost guarantees a traffic ticket a few months after you get home.
Train.
A car might be useful if you intend to visit certain rural areas and villages, but not for the ones you mentioned.
Thank you all, the train it is!
Is Lucca your destination or did you want to explore Tuscany?
Sounds like a wonderful trip! We did the Rome-Orvieto leg of this several years ago, and I’ll echo what others have said about taking the train. But we picked up a car at a rental spot a short walk from the Orvieto train station, because we were not staying in the city itself. If you are staying up in the center storico if Orvieto, you can just cab from the train station. Otherwise, you’ll want a car to get around there. The other stops are much better accessed by train, and cars are a liability in urban centers anyway.
From the train station you can take the funicular/bus combo that drops you at Duomo for a few euros
The funicular goes to Piazza Cahen; Bus A from there to the Duomo.
Reply to Letitia,
We will be staying in Lucca for a few nights to explore Tuscany. Any suggestions for a day trip outside?
We will be staying in Lucca for a few nights to explore Tuscany....
Worth mention: 2 nights is only 1 FULL day for Lucca itself. No sure what you plan to give it but there's no time for a day trip unless you stay more than 2 nights.
