We have a trip planned for June and will be traveling between cities of Florence, Venice and Varenna by train. We then plan on traveling through the area south of Varenna toward Monticchiello for a week. We have lodging arrangement for two villa during that week in Reggio Emilia and Monticchiello. We will travel by train to these two towns. We do not want to rent a car during this week and I'm wondering if anyone knows about or has experience traveling in this area using local transportation, if there is any.
We are not sure if this can be done. Does anyone know if local drivers are available and can be hired for day trips? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.
I wouldn't describe Monticchiello as an "area south of Varenna". It's kind of misleading. It's like calling Wilmington Delaware as an area south of Montreal, Canada.
But back to your question.
Reggio Emilia is a decent size city well served by rail. So if one of the villas in in town, you can probably do without a car in Reggio.
However I wouldn't stay in a villa in or near Monticchiello (prov. of Siena) without a car. Monticchiello is a minuscule village and chances are the villa is located out in the countryside with very little or no bus service. You won't be able to do much visiting without a car. You'll be stuck at your villa and I'm not even sure you'll be able to get there by bus.
You can check Rome2Rio.com for different modes of transportation.
There is "some bus service",to use it you need to connect thru Montepulciano
for most villages. http://www.busfox.com/timetable/
