Take a cab to the train station and buy your ticket. Very easy!!! There are usually many trains a day.

Sounds almost too easy. Any chance the train station is within walking distance? We have six people are are trying to avoid two cabs when possible?

I believe you can also get to Sorrento by boat (since you'll be at the harbour anyway). I'd have to check on the details. Hopefully one of the others here will have more specific information.

Once you're in Sorrento, it's easy to get to Pompeii via the Circumvesuviana (watch your valuables!). I'd highly recommend taking a guided tour of Pompeii if possible. Gaetano is an outstanding guide, but he's often booked. Check the Italy book for details. However, when you arrive at the gate to buy your tickets, you'll probably be approached by one or more Guides so it won't be hard to find one.

The commuter train from Naples station to Sorrento has a stop at Pompeii Scavi. It runs every 20-30 minutes, like a city bus, no reservation.
