Traveling in Italy with daughters

My eldest daughter Sarah is studying abroad in Cortona this fall semester - at the end of their program they will go to Naples, then finish up at Vico Equense. The program is over on November 22nd. My other daughter and I want to go to Italy and spend Thanksgiving week there although, due to visa constraints, Sarah has to fly back to the U.S. on Nov. 27th. Here's my dilemma: I have only been to Italy once, and I was on the Amalfi Coast the entire time: Naples, Sorrento, Isle of Capri, Pompeii, etc. I would love to see some new places. Originally, I had thought we could rent a place near Sarah's program in Cortona and visit Tuscany, but now that we have to meet Sarah in Naples, I'm not sure how to plan the trip. Should we take a train to Venice and just visit there? Should we rent a car and drive north? My other daughter and I could come to Italy earlier (maybe arriving around the 18th of Nov.) and do some sightseeing before we meet up with Sarah, but we all have to return to the U.S. on the 27th. Sarah will have already visited Rome and Florence.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

The further south the warmer. But, Tuscany and Umbria are worthseeing, as is Lazio. I have driven from north of Rome to Positano in about fours. Renting a car and spending time in these area, the driving south could work. You could start in say Lucca and even travel down the coast. Or, even inland. The autostrada system gets you around pretty quickly.

You ask about just going up to Venice.

Venice is one of my favourite places on earth but let me caution you that Venice can be plenty cold in late November, especially with the humid wind, and the churches can be like walk in freezers.

What would you like to see other than Venice? Rome, Orvieto, Tuscany?

You could have Sarah meet you in Rome on the 22nd. Even though she's been there, she

could not have seen everything!

You may want to find out if her tourist passport would allow further travel. Or is it the 90 day
time constraint?

You and your other daughter could do this.

17th. Fly into Venice and out of Rome.

18th. Arrive Venice.

19th. Venice.

20th. Venice.

21st. Train Venezia S. Lucia-Rome Termini. 3H45m

22nd. Rome... Sarah arrives from Naples. 1H10m meet at Station.

23rd. Rome. Evening train to Orvieto. 1H17m. Base here for the 4 nights.

Some quaint towns in the area. http://www.bestsmalltownsitaly.com/areas/center/

24th. Orvieto

25th. Rent car, 2 days, (Hertz only available here) Tuscany

26th. Tuscany

27th. Orvieto- Rome airport 1H40m. drop car. Fly Home
Only do this if you have a late morning early afternoon flight. If not drive to airport the night before.

Hope you and your girls have a great trip.
