Traveling in Italy by Train

Can you tell me the best way to travel from the port by Rome to Sorrento by train.
Also do I have to purchase tickets ahead of time and if so how do i do it.
I am going to Italy in May.

Thanks,

If you are a novice to European train travel, read up on it on the Man in Seat 61 website.

Getting from the ship to your Sorrento hotel will require multiple steps. First get from the ship to the Civitavecchia train station. You may find advice on this on your cruiseline's website, or on Cruise Critic 's Italy Ports of Call forum. Buy a ticket at the station for the next train to Roma Termini station.

From Roma Termini, you will want a ticket on a high speed Freccia train to Napoli Centrale station. You can buy this ticket in advance for a discounted price, but be aware of change restrictions if you do this. Use the Trenitalia website or app.

From Naples you have a choice if transport. You could take the local Circumvesuviana train (buy ticket at the station), or the tourist Campania train (in season). Or you could hire a private driver. Or you could take a taxi to the ferry docks and take a ferry. If taking the train or ferry, on arrival, take a taxi to your hotel.

Download the Trenitalia and Italo apps to your phone. You can purchase tickets directly from there as well as see timetables, etc.
