Traveling from Venice to Trieste in mid-October 2025.

My husband and I are English speaking only. We arrive in Venice at 18:30. We would like to get to Trieste from the airport. Suggestions? We also need mid-price accommodations in Trieste for Thursday through Monday, 4 nights. Suggestions?
Then back to Venice for a week before flying to Istanbul to pick up a cruise. I'm nervous about planning this without a travel agent. Comments welcome!!! Grazie!

From the airport you will need to get to the train station
There is a bus or take a taxi to Venezia Mestre
From Mestre train to Trieste
(I would take taxi-go to the official taxi rank in front of terminal)

Then train from Trieste to Venezia S Lucia -right on the Grand Canal

From there you have options depending on where your hotel is
If you share hotel name we can be more specific

You don’t need a travel agent to do this
All the info you need is here or in RS Guide book

Don’t worry about language barrier, there will be plenty of English speakers
Do learn some basic Italian phrases

Famialiarize yourself with the official train site here, use Italian station names

Welcome to the forum! I checked rome2rio.com and there appear to be buses, trains and airport transfer service between Venice Airport and Trieste. That website is a good starting point to find the sites for all the operators. For the return you may want to go to “Venice” rather than the airport so you get to the main bus / train station area where the road comes over from the mainland.

One thing to note about Venice - unlike most everywhere else in the world, all the transit options are by water. So it’s an allilaguna boat instead of an airport shuttle, a vaporetto boat instead of a bus, and a water taxi instead of a taxi cab.

For hotels, start with booking.com, Google or TripAdvisor and filter on price and any other must-haves. I like to use the map view and look at where the property is located compared to things I want to see. Once you find a place you like book it directly with the property if they have their own site or through booking.com.

I’m sure others will respond with details about the Venice-Trieste transfers and specific hotel recommendations but this should get you started. Good luck!

Welcome. Your arrival in Venice is early in the evening and it will be difficult to get to Trieste before midnight. Would you consider staying your first night in Venice? I looked at Flixbus and put a random date of 14 Oct. They have a bus departing the airport at 21:20 and arriving in Trieste at 23:10. You still would not get to your accommodations until about midnight.

" I checked rome2rio.com "

Rome2Rio is not very good at giving you useful information. It tells you that ways to get form A to B exist, but you already know that before.

October is still far away, and so train schedules will not be completely published yet. Anyway, most trains on that route are regional trains, where you do not need to buy tickets in advance.

Last train from Mestre to Trieste is at 22:!5, last fast train is at 22:10. So getting to Mestre from the airport, then catching the next train appears to be possible.

To all of the responses, I am extremely grateful. I've learned more from this than my hours of research. I'm moving closer to this planning, but with Easter weekend upon us, I am focusing on my faith. Gratitude is a huge part of that, and I'm thanking each one of you who took the time to educate me. Blessings to all.

Because your arrival is evening and I assume you will have luggage you might condidero just hiring a driver to take you right to Trieste-if budget allows. I’d guess in the 150-200 euros range?

We have used this company

WengenK - as I said, Rome2Rio is a starting point. Just because they say something is possible doesn’t make it so.

I saw links to websites for bus and train operators, which I expect would have details about their schedules. I guess the alternative would be to google “Venice Trieste train” or “Venice Trieste bus” and see what comes up.

We'll be making this transit it late August (~7:30PM arrival time). We're normally train people. This time, knowing we'll be jet-lagged, we decided to book a shared ride with GoOpti.com (we have used them before). Not cheap, but IMO reasonable (~100 euros) for meeting us @ baggage claim and dropping us off at the front door where we'll be staying in Trieste.
