Traveling from Venice to Orvieto - car or train?

My family of 4 will be going from Venice to Orvieto in July. We are staying in an Agriturismo in Orvieto, so I know we'll need a car once we arrive, but is it suggested to drive from Venice?

Rent the car in Venice. Throw your luggage in the car and take them out when you arrive.
Watch the speed limit on the causeway out of Venice.

For a family of 4 you'll save money and possibly time with the car.

I'd also suggest to rent a car in Venice and drive from the start and save yourselves some money and the hassle of a train change in Bologna or Florence.

You need the car anyhow, so you might as well get it from the start. Besides only Hertz is in Orvieto, while all companies are in Piazzale Roma in Venice (inside the big City parking structure).

The drive is almost all on freeways from Mestre all the way to Orvieto. It's a long 5-6 hour drive, but you can stop at rest stops along the way, where you can eat some food at the famous Autogrill self service restaurants on the freeways (good food actually).

Just follow directions in this order from Mestre's freeway entrance: Padova > Bologna > Firenze > Roma.
The Orvieto exit is about 1 hr before Roma.
