Traveling from Venice to FCO...Train for plane?

I will be flying in and out of FCO this summer. The last part of our trip will be in Venice. Our plane leaves from FCO @ 2:10 pm. Is it best to take a train to FCO or to take a quick flight? They both seem to be similar in price.

There is a train leaving Venice @ 6:25 am arriving in Rome @ 10:10 am the same day as our flight. I do know that I would have to take a second train to get to FCO. It looks like there might be an earlier train out of Venice leaving @ 5:15 am and arriving in Rome @ 9:10 am although it hasn't been offered yet.

The flights out of Venice are frequent and could get me to FCO as early as 7:25 am.

I was unable to fly out of Venice due to the flights offered by our airline. I prefer not to fly or train into Rome the night before but it is an option that I know I might need to be open to.

Any help and tips are appreciated!
Thank you,
Cara

Most would go to Rome from Venice the night before the flight instead of the day of which is too risky.

Our plane leaves from FCO @ 2:10 pm.

Where does it go? If to a non-Schengen country, the consensus is to be at airport 3 hours early. ( i.e. 11AM) In theory a very early departure from VCE would work, except the logistics of early flights from VCE are ugly.

If I were doing it I would take a train/plane to Rome the day before.

It is your choice to decide if the risk/cost buying a walk up ticket if you miss the flight from FCO is worth a 'last night' in Venice.

We are traveling to Iceland after our time in Italy. It seems like getting to Rome the night before is the safest option. I was mostly just trying to save money. We are traveling with 4 so would have to rent two hotel rooms but it is obviously worth it so we don't miss our flight. Thanks for the feedback! I am a first timer to Europe :)

As for saving money, either way you are paying for lodging, so a night in Rome is not an 'extra' night.

I've already prepaid for an airbnb in Venice. It has a minimum stay of 3 nights so I am locked into the rental. We need 3 bedrooms with 2 baths which was difficult to come by so definitely want to keep the rental. I guess we could take an evening train and still get to enjoy the rental throughout the day.

Just take a late afternoon/early evening train to Rome. Have dinner and a last evening in Rome.

Since Iceland is in the Schengen zone, I doubt that you’d have to be at FCO until 1 PM. If I were making the trip, I would would take the 6:25 train and then the Leonardo Express to the airport. Sometimes you can be over-cautious. This might be one of those times.

Thank you for your reply Philip. I will definitely consider doing just that. It would be easier to just train in the day of.

unless there is difficulty on the trains that day. Not frequently but you wouldn't want it to be you that was caught out...

If you were going to the US/Canada I would say go the night before. For Iceland I’d be comfortable going EARLY that morning. If the 5:15 train is offered, take that. My thinking is that trains are less prone to delays/cancellations than planes and getting to Venice airport super early is a pain.
If you get to Termini station in Rome, normally you’d take the Leonardo express train to the airport, which should be fast and easy. If for some reason there’s an issue with it, or the timing, you can get a taxi from the station to the airport.

Do keep an eye on train strikes. These are announced ahead of time. If there will be one on your day - unlikely but possible - you will need to know and figure out another way to get to Rome a day ahead.

I would fly so I was at the airport rather than train to a city and another train to the airport. Fewer connections to go wrong.....particularly with a large group. If you have already committed your lodgings in Venice, and there are frequent flights to FCO, I would think there is sufficient buffer for it to be successful. It does make for an early airport arrival, however, so you need to see how you are going to get your group to the airport. A bespoke water taxi might be what you need if they will run as early as 5a.m. (or earlier).

I would spend the last night in Roma because it is a prudent strategy, which we always use.

I would leave from Venezia SL at 7:25 and be at FCO at 11:52 (one change in Roma Termini).

A plane would not get you there that fast once you consider the time to reach the Marco Polo airport and the airport check in and security procedures.

The direct train to Fiumicino airport leaves from Venezia Mestre station at 5:37 AM.

Mestre.
My best option would staying in bed one hour more and changing at Tiburtina, but I'm known as the last bird in the breakfast queue.
