Traveling from Venice to Cortina Italy

We would like to take advantage of a cheap flight round trip to Milan. With that in mind we're looking into a 7nt cruise out of Venice. On returning we would have 12 days and thought if it was possible we could work our way to Cortina taking a different route back to Milan. It sounds like the bus only runs during season, does that include September, also is it possible to take the train? From Cortina we plan to go to Bolzano then Verona and head back to Milan for our flight Is this a crazy plan?

You don't say when you are planning to take this trip, but depending on the weather the easiest transportation option would be to rent a car. You can pick one up at Piazzale Roma in Venice. It's an easy 2.5 hour drive to Cortina d'Ampezzo, then a beautiful drive through Val Gardena to Bolzano. But unless you have a reason to go all the way to Bolzano I would suggest stopping in Selva, St Cristina, or Ortisei in Val Gardena. That would be 1.5 to 2 hours from Cortina. The drive from Val Gardena back to Verona would be just over a couple of hours. You could drop your rental car in Verona and take the train back to Milan. Much of the drive from Venice to Cortina is a four-lane highway. From there to Val Garden is two-lane through the mountains, but as long as your comfortable driving on curvy roads it's an easy, beautiful drive.

Travel dates were Sept 1 - 23 but I just found out the air jumped from $849 to $1225 in less the 24h, I should have booked yesterday! The whole idea of working the Milan thing was the price I feel sick

That's too bad. Under $900 for round tip to Milan would have been great a great price. I live near to you in Asheville and the least expensive flight I found for next August out of AVL into either Venice or Milan was over $1200.
