I wonder what the best way of getting from Venice to Athens in the latter half of the month is. I suspect that the cruise ships haven't started yet, though I haven't checked (googled) the answer. As for flying, I suppose it would be a local airline, so having an Away carry-on (not the "bigger" carry-on) would make sense.

I flew with Aegean, Athens to Venice after the Greece tour. I use a Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45, the largest carry-on, and it’s convertible to a back pack. No problem.

One-way flights look quite expensive: $550, with a stop in Frankfurt! Maybe in the summer, there are more options. I think I may drop the idea entirely of going from Venice to Athens in March, now.
