My soon to be wife and I are getting Married In Positano In mid September and then heading up the coast to Cinque Terre for 3 nights. What is the best way to travel and also we need a recomendation on a place to stay. (B & B) thanks JMG
Okay, per your PM to me, you've got the wedding requirements all taken care of (congratulations, that's an accomplishment in Italy). Go by train from Sorrento to the CT. The website link below gives you train schedules, you don't buy tickets from the US, the site shows you the schedules--it's a fairly long haul but don't even think about driving to the CT from Sorrento, far more trouble than it's worth. Here's the rail website: Europe's best train schedule websiteYou mentioned in your PM going to Tuscany AFTER the CT. Driving around Tuscany hill towns is where you want to rent the car, but rent the car AFTER the CT, pick up the car at someplace like the Siena train station, drive around Tuscany, and then return the car to the Florence airport (not Florence city center) since you're flying out of Florence. My advice assumes you really want to do what you said in your PM, which is go to the CT before Tuscany. That's not the only way to do it, depending on where you're departing Italy from.
We stayed in LaMala in Vernazza. It is a very classy, clean, first class place to stay in CT. I would highly recommend it. www.lamala.it
JMG, from Positano, to Naples, there are two ways. First, the SITA bus from Positano to the Sorrento train station. From your thread title, you may be starting your travel from Sorrento. From Sorrento, take the Circumvesuviana train to the Naples Garibaldi train station. Second, you can take the ferry from either Positano or Sorrento to Naples. The boat dock is about a mile from the train station.
From Naples to the CT, I would recommend a journey from Naples to La Spezia. La Spezia is just short of the 5 CT towns. If you make your destination one of the 5 CT towns, you will often change trains there anyway. The reason is that for 3-days in the CT, I suggest that you purchase the 3-day Cinque Terre Treno card. It's a special card that provides unlimited train travel for the validated period, free travel on the coastal trails (yes there are trolls who want your money on the trails) and free rides on the mini-buses in the towns. You can buy these cards most anywhere in the CT but it's easy in La Spezia since the TI where you can buy them is in the train station. It does not cover the ferry between the towns. Buy your CT Treno card and jump on the next train at no cost to your CT town. The card cost a bit more than P2P and trail costs but its very convenient to pay once.

I'll second Scott's recommendation for La Malà. It's a splurge (perfect for a honeymoon!), but it's worth every penny. Although, if you're referring to this September, I suspect that they might already be booked. (They only have 4 rooms.)
