Traveling from Siena to Assisi?

Here's what we are thinking of.

Looking at the option of driving our rental car from Siena to Perugia on our last day with our rental car.

We would be returning the rental car at one of the 2 eurocar offices in Perugia, then taking a bus to Assisi.
Looks as if the eurocar office that is NOT at the airport may be a better option?

Driving to Perugia, and then a bus to Assisi appears to be faster than taking a train from Siena to Assisi?

Questions would be:
What Eurocar office is the better option?
Once the car is returned where do we go to get a bus to Assisi?
How do we get to the bus...taxi?

If all the above is not our best option, we would appreciate your advise on a better option.

From Assisi, we are planning to take a train to Rome.

Thanks.

The simplest thing to do would be to return the car in Siena and take Flixbus directly to Assisi. It would most likely be faster, cheaper and less stressful. I’ve used FlixBus in Italy in the recent past and have been happy with their service. Purchase tickets ahead of time on line (download their app) to get best prices.

Philip,
We were just looking at all of the options and just discovered the same, thanks.
Looks as if there are only 2 buses leaving Siena, one at 8:30 am, and the other at 5:30 pm?
Is there somewhere we can leave our luggage at the Siena Bus Station?
Do you know where the bus station is located....at the train station?
thanks!

About where to leave luggage in Siena -- I am not aware of a left-luggage at the station, but your innkeeper will probably have experience with people in your predicament and thus have a place to store your bags (e.g., in the basement), either for a small fee or gratis.

Flix Bus uses a terminal at the RR station.

If you're unable to store luggage at your Siena lodgings, there may be luggage storage in the Piazza Gramsci underground ticket office area. It was operating a few years ago. Transit between Piazza Gramsci and the train station is easy by taxi or frequent local bus.

I would drive all the way to Assisi and keep the car while there. Less than 90 min drive and you are at your destination. If you have already made car arrangements, call and prolong your rental period.

That way if you feel like taking a short visit to Spello or to Gubbio (both of which I recommend) you can.

Assisi has plenty of public parking lots all around the city walls, and some hotels have their own parking too.

Several years ago I stayed at the very inexpensive hotel below. They have parking and it’s walking distance from everything (5 min walk to City Hall and 15 min to the S.Francis Basilica).

If you want a slightly fancier place, with private parking, but still walking distance from everything, consider the one below:

Once you are done with Assisi, you can drive to Rome, or, if you prefer, return the car at Foligno (Europcar has an office there) and proceed by train to Rome. The trains from Assisi to Rome stop at Foligno (actually in most cases you will be changing trains in Foligno). You can also backtrack to Perugia and catch the same train there (Assisi station is between Perugia and Foligno).

Personal experience with car rental in Foligno... The car rental office is a pretty good hike from the train station. Also, the office did not keep extended hours, so late returns may not be possible. On the plus side, we met some very nice people and a heroic UBER driver while we were stranded in Foligno.
