My husband and I will be traveling from Salerno-Sorrento on 10/15 and Sorrento-Naples on 10/19. What would be the best way to travel between these places taking into account price and ease of travel. I’m a bit concerned about using a ferry in case they aren’t running those days. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks in advance.
Sorrento to Naples-take the Circumvesuviana train
Salerno to Sorrento-bus or private driver
Or
I suppose you could train to Naples then catch Circumvesuviana to Sorrento
Some recommendations for drivers in this current thread
(You might want to correct spelling in your subject line)
Thanks ChristineH.
Topic is corrected. You’ve gotta love autocorrect…
Neither the gritty, crowded Circumvesuviana nor the Trenitalia between Salerno and Naples require/permit advance booking in October for these routes, so you don't have commit ahead of the day. There is a dirt-cheap SITA bus from Salerno to Amalfi, where you take a second bus to Sorrento.
You didn't say how much luggage you have, or whether "best" favors cost, elapsed time, comfort, privacy, reliability, crowding, or just what. Because you can get a car service at the last minute, (wild guess, 250 Euros???) this is not a high stakes matter, unless you don't have the money.
Two choices (AFAIK): the cheap way and the easy way. The cheap way is public transportation. There is no single bus between Salerno and Sorrento. You can download schedules on the SITA website. Note the column headings - there are buses that only run on weekends, only weekdays, etc. There is a line from Salerno to Amalfi and from Amalfi to Sorrento. You line up for the bus and if the line is long, you may have to wait for the next bus. The buses do take standing room passengers. From Sorrento to Naples is better. There is the Circumvesviani, basically a metro line. No connections. The trains can be crowded and wheelie bags can roll away if you aren't holding on to them. There is no luggage storage on the train. The other option is a private transfer. Especially from Salerno to Sorrento, I'd recommend looking into that. It's about a 1 hour drive - more in rush hour - but it's door-to-door (for the bus you may need a taxi at one or both ends). Most of why it's faster is that you wouldn't take the coastal road. The bus (or train to Naples and Circumvesuviana to Sorrento) would take easily twice that long.
Maybe your hotel/B&B owner can arrange a private transfer for somewhat less than the rates you'll find web-searching.
Good luck.
PS I leave for Salerno tomorrow morning
If you're going from Sorrento to the Naples Airport, take the Curreri Viaggi bus from the train station in Sorrento. That way you avoid having to do any transfers in downtown Naples. Otherwise, I'd probably just take the train into Naples. The Circumvisuviana won't be super crowded at that time of the year; especially if you avoid typical commuter rush hour.
You're traveling during a relatively slack time of the year. You don't need to buy any of your transit tickets more than a day in advance so you can just look at the weather, check the website and see if the ferry is running. Or better yet, have your friendly Italian-speaking innkeeper make the call for you.
There are ton of threads talking about various drivers and busses and cost/benefits for Salerno-Sorrento transport.
Thanks everyone. We are tweaking our itinerary and now have the transportation covered.
