Hi,
I'm about to go on a trip to Italy. I am interested in feedback about the best way to go to Positano from Rome by train.
I Know I can go either to Naples or Salerno. I want the simplest way, with the least amount of stress. Which city is closest to Positano and what suggestions might you have on how to get to Positano once I arrive in one of these cities.
Also I am wondering if I should buy tickets in advance or just wait till I get to Rome.
One other question I have is about going from Sorrento where we will be staying a couple of days to Pompeii. We will not have luggage because after seeing Pompeii we plan to return to Sorrento for the night and then go to Naples to catch a train to Rome. What is the best way to get from Sorrento to Pompeii? How long does it take? What is the best way to go from Sorrento to Naples to catch the train back to Rome? Should I pre-purchase our tickets.
We are moving around a lot and I'm a little stressed about it. Hopefully we can just relax and enjoy this trip with a minimal amount of complications. One last question. We are taking a ferry to Capri and spending one night there. Should I reserve the ferry in advance? Well you can see I have a multitude of questions. I hope to be able to share what I found out about this trip with the forum when I get back.
I am amazed and so appreciative about the quantity and quality of responses I have received in the past. People on this forum have been so generous with what they have learned traveling. Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Marlene Montoya
Sorrento to Pompeii. So easy. Not a long trip.?Take the commuter train, Circumvesuviana ,from Sorrento right to the entrance of Pompeii.
You do not need to reserve the ferry to Capri from Naples. I assume Naples but you did not specify. And you also can take a ferry from Sorrento to Capri.
Positano to Rome by train. No trains in Positano, buses and ferries, cars. Train to Rome leaves from Naples.
There is no train service to Positano -- train service to either Sorrento or Salerno. And from there bus or ferry to Positano. Salerno would would be closer than Naples but Naples shouldn't be in the question. If going to Sorrento, you could save money by buying a discount ticket from Rome to Naples. Remember discount tickets come with restrictions. No discount for the train to Sorrento.
Sorrento, Pompeii, and Naples are all served by the Circumvesuvianna train -- basically a commuter train between Sorrento and Naples. No reservation needed -- just get on and go. Time is rougly 30 minutes from Sorrento to Pompeii and roughly an hour or so on to the Naples train station.
You have a lot of questions that are generally covered in a good guide book. Have you looked at the Steves book for Italy? If not go to the library and check it out.
Did you not read the information posted in your previous threads?
Take the train from Rome to Salerno, then the ferry to Positano. As long as you can commit to a specific train at a specific time, buying your train ticket in advance (nonrefundable) will save money.
You need to define "best". Sorrento to Pompeii or Naples is easily done on the Circumvesuviana commuter train. No advance purchase required. For Naples, if you have a lot of luggage, you could instead take a bus or hire a car and driver. The Rome2rio website gives your transportation options. Click on the links for more detailed info.
Ferry to and from Capri - depends on when you're going. We went in shoulder season and bought our tickets at the dock. If you're going in high season, you might want to buy in advance.
Just read your July 1st posting of the same question with the same answers. Nothing much has changed in two months except that you are running out of time for advance ticket purchases. If you are going on the 8th of Sep as you indicated in your earlier posting, then you probably are too late to buy discount train tickets as I am sure they are all sold out by now. You can check on line to see if any discount tickets are still available. If not, just buy the tickets when you get to the train station. Base tickets are reasonable in Italy.
