Traveling from Rome to Siena to Venice

My husband and I are trying to wrap up booking travel within Italy. I'm looking for ways to be able to travel from Rome to Siena and stop at towns between the two (I really want to stop at Sienza and other places we find of interest). I think between Siena and Venice we're set with taking the train. My itinerary is below, I could use any help I could get figuring out transportation - I drive manual, my husband needs a refresher. Our lodging is already booked, with the exception of Siena.
Also, any suggestions on where to stay in Rome? I stayed in Garbatella when I studied there, I'd want something closer to the city center.

Day 1-4 - Rome (on day 4 depart for siena, potentially driving and stopping at sienza)
Day 4 leave Rome for Siena
Day 4-6 siena (I wish we could spend more time there, but unfortunately it was all we could do with planning around others that we're meeting up with)
Day 6 leave siena for Venice (probably the train? or the bus to florence, and then the train from there)

Thank You in Advance!

My husband and I took a trip from Rome to Orvieto by train and rented a car at Hertz, which was across the street from the train station. We stayed 2 nights at Antica Olivaia, up in the hills looking across at the old town. The place is fabulous, and the views beautiful. We drove to Siena...then onto Florence, which wasn't too far. We turned the car in at the Hertz office in Florence and took the train to Venice, after a 3 night stay in Flirence. Train is very easy from the Florence station direct and fast. Good luck!
