Hello,
I am planning to go to Italy. June 4th or fifth of this year. I will be in Rome first for just a couple of days, and then want to go to Pompeii, ( one day, and then to Capri ( one or two nights), and Positano (two nights). But I want to avoid Naples. I want to spend a couple of weeks traveling. What is the best way to do this. Any suggestions about these places would also be appreciated. Can I fly from Rome to this area or is it better to go by ground? Thank you, Marlene
If you're going from Rome to any of those places, the most logical route takes you through Naples (Rome to Naples by train, switch trains in Naples and go to Pompei, then Sorrento, then Capri and/or Positano).
You could, I suppose, "go around" Naples and head for Salerno and approach the Amafli Coast from there but you would be going out of your way to do that. Is there some reason you feel so compelled to "avoid Naples" (lots of old parking tickets? mafia vendetta?)?
FWIW, while Naples may have a reputation as maybe not the most perfect place in Italy (which some say is undeserved), all you would be doing wouldbe passing through their train station for a few minutes, which is perfectly OK...
Why do you want to avoid Naples? It's a good hub for ground transport to Pompeii and further south to Sorrento/boats to Capri. Or you can take a boat from Naples to Capri. It doesn't make any sense to fly to Naples from Rome (Naples would be the logical airport) when a fast train from central Rome can get you there in a little over an hour.
So you want to spend a few days in Rome and ? days in Capri. What else do you want to do with your couple of weeks? What are you interested in doing on Capri? Where are you flying home from?
There's really no good way to get to Pompeii, Capri and Positano without passing thru the Naples area on your way. Well maybe if you took a helicopter, but that's not very practical. If you flew to Naples airport, your bus or taxi would take you through the Naples area. Even if you approached the Amalfi Coast via Salerno, your train would go through Napoli Centrale, possibly with a change there. Not sure why you're trying to avoid Naples. I've never had a problem there, even when walking around the historic center.
Rather than changing hotels 3 times, you may wish to consider staying in Sorrento and visiting Pompeii and Capri from there, then move on to Positano. Alternately, you could stay in Sorrento and visit Pompeii and Positano from there, then move on to Capri.
It is a quick train from Rome to the Amalfi coast "portal cities" of Naples and Salerno.
Do you plan on spending time in Rome at the end of the trip as well? You will want at least the night before your return flight.
You have allotted "a couple days" for Rome and four nights for the coast but you have two weeks overall, so were you looking to fill the time on the coast or what?
Why avoid Naples? But you can easily avoid it by taking the train to Salerno, and you can visit Pompeii from Salerno or choose one of several smaller towns in the vicinity to access Pompeii. We need more information about your desired plans.
Take the train, tickets can be purchased here.
Roma Termini-Napoli Centrale. Change the date and time. All of the June schedule may not yet be loaded, but when I checked a lot were.

The easiest way to Pompeii Scavi would be this commuter train https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/naples-to-sorrento-train-schedule
Stop at Pompeii on your way to Sorrento, 40 minutes. There's a place to check your luggage at the site.
Continue on to Sorrento, 30 minutes, and either spend the night, or take this bus to Positano.

Return to Naples and continue your journey from there. Either taxi or take this bus from the port to the train station. http://www.anm.it/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2580&Itemid=260
I've been traveling to Naples and the surroundings for the past 15 years and have never had any frightening experiences, and I'm a 72 year old woman. Just be aware of your surroundings.

Are you trying to avoid the city itself or the train station in Naples? Not going to be able to conveniently avoid the train station. Not all of your locations have airports and, second, using airports just adds a lot of time and stress that a train doesn't have. A little better explanation of what you are want to do and why might improve the responses.
