Hello! First time traveling to Italy.
Wondering which train to take along the way. Any recommendations on inexpensive places to stay?
Which train to take? Take the one going there. Not sure what you are asking.
Use trenitalia.com for the schedules.
Check the Steves' guide book for Italy for recommendations. And you need to define inexpensive with an Euro amount that you are comfortable spending. Inexpensive has no meaning by itself.
There are several trains daily from Roma Termini to Orvieto, then take the funivia up to the town, then a bus (funivia ticket covers the bus ride) to Piazza Duomo. Are you staying in Orvieto?
It may be faster to return to Roma Termini and take a fast train to Venezia Santa Lucia (about four hours from Roma).
Or are you asking about stopping for a few days between Orvieto and Venezia?
The fastest trains from Orvieto to Venice that you'll find on schedules are the direct InterCity trains. But if you prefer the timing of a different departure, then the connection point is usually Florence or Bologna, rather than backtracking to Rome.
It's pretty clear what she's asking, not sure why anyone would give that kind of reply. I'm glad the RS poster gave you some good info and I wish I had some. I'm also planning a trip in those cities here pretty soon. I've been finding good deals at airbnd in lots of the cities I'm traveling to. Also the Rick book has good hotel suggestions that are pretty affordable and well located. Nothing specific though sorry.
When are you planning on going? In Orvieto, B&B Medici is very nice. Venice accommodations tend to be pricey. We stayed at the Hotel Anastasia. It's in the San Marco area. Others on this forum would say to stay in other areas but for our first time in Venice we found it to be a very convenient jumping off point to see all of Venice and it was easy to locate as we got used to the maze of Venice.
Thank you for all of your help. Great ideas. We are flying into Rome and staying a night in Orvieto. Then making our way by train to Venice to meet up with the tour. After the tour we hope to take a train from Rome to Pompeii. I'll look into all of your suggestions.
We took the train from Rome to Orvieto and it took about 1.30 hours, but I don't remember which one, other than it was the local train out of Tributina and it was in the late morning. I found the schedule online. Sorry, but it's been a couple of years. We rented a car and stayed at an Agritisimo Antica Olivaia for 3 nights. It was our favorite time in Italy. The hosts were fabulous, we loved the village, and the food was amazing. Our favorite restaurant was Trattoria del Moro Aronne, which is only open in the evenings. I would absolutely go back to Orvieto!
