I am wondering what would be the preferable order of cities to visit. After a cruise we are heading south to the Amalfi Coast then Puglia. We are starting in Rome and ending in Bari. Matera is a definite place we want to visit. We are a group of 4 and renting a car. Our first night we have a room booked in the Pompeii area. Our last 2 nights we have booked in Bari. We have a total of 11 nights. Any advice on a good plan of travel? We love food, wine, art, history and adventure.
Are the two nights in Bari your only time in Puglia? Look at Polignano, Monopoli and Lecce.
This is one of the most comprehensive lists I've found anywhere. It's like going down Alice's rabbit hole. We've visited a large number of her recommended towns and found her to be spot on.

Do look at her recommendation on Locorotondo.
We intend to spend most of our time in Puglia.
Puglia is a region in Italy.
Since you want to start in Matera (Basilicata )
Spend 2 nights. It's a fascinating city deserving a 1 night stay, but much better with two.
These are the towns/villages you might want to research. These are just ideas from two previous trips.
From Locorondo as a base, you have easy day trips to Alberobello, Martina Franca, and Ostuni. 3-4 nights.
From Lecce as a base, Otranto, Nardo and Gallipoli. 3 nights.
Polignano a Mare and Monopoli need 2 nights.
Choose 1 drive to the other.
As do Bari and Trani. Stay in Bari day trip to Trani

Hope this helps.
