My son, daughter and I will be leaving Paris on 6/29 and are due in Venice on 7/5. If the cinque terre is in good shape after the flooding we would like to stay there for a few days in between. Any suggestions about how to get there from Paris and where to stay? And then how to get from there to Venice? My son's favorite place in the world is Vernazza. Not sure if it will be ready or not? If so, where should we stay?
Lisa, To begin with, Le Cinque Terre is absolutely in good shape after the flooding. Three of the towns weren't affected and the "old town" section of Monterosso is pretty much back to normal. However, Vernazza was affected to a greater extent, so repairs are still ongoing there. Many of the accommodations, restaurants and other facilities have re-opened, and they're ready for visitors. Rail transportation between the five towns is normal. If you want a list of the businesses that are operating in Vernazza, post another note. The trip from Paris to the C.T. by rail is going to be a LONG day. The easiest train route I could find was a departure from Gare de Lyon at 07:49, arriving Monterosso at 19:02 (time 11:13M, 1 change at Milano Porta Garibaldi, reservations compulsory on both legs). In the same situation, I'd probably consider a flight from Paris / ORY to Pisa via EasyJet. They currently have a prices listed on 29 June for €113.99 (depart 11:50, arrive 13:30). Those prices may increase further as the flight fills up! I hesitate to mention this, but RyanAir has much cheaper flights, however they depart from Beauvais which is a considerable distance outside Paris. There are of course the usual hassles and extra fees to consider when booking with them. If travelling by budget air, the rail trip to Monterosso is ~1.5 hours (I used Monterosso for researching trips, as you don't have a definite destination yet). For travel at the end of June, I would highly recommend getting some accommodations booked SOON! I started in March, and still trying to get one night arranged in Monterosso. You may have an easier time in Vernazza? Happy travels!
