Hi..We are taking the high speed train from Rome to Naples and then wish to pickup a car in Naples to drive to Pompeii and use for rest of trip on AC. I know that is not very recommended but several other people have encouraged us. My question is..is it possible to rent a car directly at the high speed frec station? If so, Is driving from there going to be like "Rome type of crazy"? If so, do you have any suggestions on how we can rent a car in this area from a location that puts us directly on a decent route to Pompeii? Lastly, if we hired a car to take us to our hotel in Meta, outside of Sorrento, is there such a thing as a car service that will deliver a car to you? We will eventually be returning from Praiano directly to Naples, then training back again. Thanks in advance.

We have stayed in hotels that have arrangements with car rental agencies that bring a rental car to the hotel, where we did paperwork in the lobby. Check with your hotel to see if they have any such arrangements.
If not, could you just have your driver drop you at a car rental agency near your hotel where you have prearranged a rental with a drop off in Naples.

The Frecciarossa trains stop at the same station as regular Trenitalia trains and the Circumvesuviana (CV) commuter rail line to Sorrento (and Meta.) It is very much "inside Naples" so it would not be a good place to get a car. It sounds like you are not potential CV customers, so I'll drop that topic. I like the hotel delivery plan, but you could surely take the CV to Sorrento and rent there, if not in Meta.
Make sure you read up (for example in many old threads here) about Italian car rental, insurance, IDPs, ZTLs, and parking, I cannot recommend driving to Sorrento from Meta for dinner, by the way. Read up on evening street closures in Sorrento. Find out if there is a route to return to Naples without going through Sorrento. Note that you might have a drop-off fee for not returning to the pickup location-especially if you have hotel delivery. You could also return the car to the airport, and take a fixed rate cab ride to the rail station.
