Has anyone traveled from Cinque Terre (Monterosso al Mare to be exact) to the car museums in Modena, Maranello and outside Bologna? My husband wants to go to all 3 museums and I'm searching for the best travel route with a rental car. That seems to be faster than the trains.
By highway You can go north to Parma than east to Modena and finally in Bologna. Or you can go east to Pistoia/Prato, than north to Bologna and than west to Modena.
If you like scenic route you can cross the Appennine following the route Aulla - Castelnuovo in Garfagnana - San Pellegrino in Alpe - Pievepelago - Pavullo and finally down to Maranello (several of these villages deserve a stop....). From Maranello to Modena and finally Bologna.
You can decide to sleep for the night in Modena or Bologna, or even in Maranello itself. Do come and back from Cinque Tere is doable, but means leave very early and spend several hours driving.
