Hi, looking for advice. During our upcoming trip to Italy we will need to travel from Milan to Salerno. The train is approximately 5.5 - 6 hours. To save time we are thinking of flying to Naples and then either renting a car or taking a train to Salerno and renting a car there (we need a vehicle for a day trip the following day). What would be the best option? How is the drive from Naples airport to Salerno? Thanks!
Once you add the travel time to and from the airports, check in, security etc, I don't think you will save any time by flying.
Yes, it will take longer to fly than the train. 1 hour to get to the airport, 2 hours before flight, 1 hour in the air, 1 hour to get off the plane with your luggage and get to Napoli Centrale, 3/4 hour to Salerno. 5 3/4 hour vs 5 1/2 hours. Add in the hassles of security, luggage check, plus the expense of getting to and from the airports.
and I also hate getting from the Napoli airport to the station to THEN get to Salerno via train......if you train it from Milan, you will only have 3 legs of the total journey (transport to station, train, and transport from station) versus way more with the plane...
And if your trip start falls within business hours, you can rent right from the station area the next day!
We took train from Salerno to Venice
That was a bit longer IIRC 6.5 hours
We actually enjoyed it
It gave us a rest day which we needed
We took a picnic on board
We read, napped, ate
I’d happily do it again
The flight will take longer when you add it all up
Too many changes
Why do you need a car in Salerno?
Thanks for the replies. We need a car because we are attending a WW 2 ceremony in a rural location the next morning. It is a 90 minute drive and we need to be there for 10:00 a.m. so I want to secure the car the day before.
Ah!
The car rental agencies are right there at the station
Check their opening hours
